Small Baby Nappy Changing Table – D PercyRead about space saving nappy changing tables and other solutions for dealing with diapers in a small apartment or cramped bedroom.
New young parents are often faced with the difficulty of a large amount of baby paraphernalia to be squeezed into a small home. Finding a small crib is one challenge. the nappy changing station might be located in the nursery, parents’ bedroom, bathroom or it could be in any room of the house. In the early months there could be 8 or more nappy changes a day so it needs to be convenient and ideally one changing area on each floor of the house.
Diaper changing station solutions for cramped spaces could include:
- a small changing table,
- a cot top changing table,
- a wall hung, fold away diaper changing unit,
- temporary, packaway baby changing stations.
Small Nappy Changing Tables
These tables are recommended for up to 12 months of age. Older than this there is a greater risk of baby falling as she wriggles and her legs will dangle over the end of a small changing table from 18 months or so.
Baby changing tables are structurally very sturdy for safety reason and a typical 2-year-old will still be in diapers, parents may choose to continue to use the small table.
Wall Hung, Fold Away Baby Changing Tables
Following the space saving example frequently used in public washrooms, fold away nappy changing tables are not exclusively for commercial use. There are many manufacturers and brand names associated with these including Diaper Deck, Koala Bear and Foundations.
Taking up wall space but folding away when not in use to protrude only inches from the wall, a wall hung unit can be positioned in places which are not practical for other uses such as over another piece of furniture or even over the toilet.
Cot Top Baby Changing Table
There are a number of different styles of cot top changing tables. some are specifically designed for and sold with travel cots, such the Pack n Play range by Graco. others are specifically designed wooden boards which can fit securely over a standard wooden cot or cot bed. When not in use they can be removed and stored easily in any narrow space such as behind some furniture.
In the day time the cot table can remain over the cot. Cot tables offer the additional advantage that a young baby can be distracted by a mobile over the cot whilst having a nappy changed.
A Temporary or Portable Diaper Changing Station
In a house with many levels or a large house it can be more practical to have baby changing supplies on every floor or in every room. With 8 nappies per day to change and around the clock breastfeeding a new mum should do all she can to rest.
Invest in two or three changing mats and keep them in different rooms of the house. keep a large baby changing bag well stocked with clean nappies, wipes and creams, hand washing gel and a change of baby clothes. This will work as a portable changing kit but disposal of soiled nappies needs to be planned to suit the household.
Note: pay attention to baby safety, do not leave baby unattended if she could fall off a table, bed or sofa, or be smothered by soft cushions.
Babies’ Nappy Changing Tables for a Small Home
New parents are often young and living in small accommodation so there is a real need to plan the space and use the nursery budget carefully. Whilst there are good practical reasons for buying a baby changing table for the nursery, this is not essential. Wall hung changing units and cot top diaper changing tables are good alternatives.
